Day 02: Amman – Short orientation tour of Amman – Jerash – Ajloun 3 hours hike – Ajloun Hotel

Distance : 200 KM
Driving time : 3 Hours
Overnight : Ajloun

In the early morning we visit the old and new Amman as part of a city tour and visit the citadel with the Archaeological Museum, the well-preserved Roman theater, and a visit through the souk in Downtown, which will give you many new covers. The citadel rises high above Amman and is one of the earliest fortifications. Numerous Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic objects have been secured there during various excavations, and the excavations have not yet been completed. Important buildings include the Temple of Hercules, the Omayyad palace complex, and the Byzantine church. The Roman theatre was built around 151 AD and offered space for around 6000 spectators. It has been partially restored and is now used again for cultural events.

Jerash is one of the best-preserved ruins in the Roman world. In Roman times, Jerash was called Gerasa and was a member of the Decapolis, an economic federation of ten different Greco-Roman cities. Even today you can walk through the triumphal arch, which the Gerasener built in 129 AD in honor of Emperor Hadrian. The construction method of the time was so advanced that even today many parts of the city are original. However, other parts have been conscientiously restored with a lot of effort. You can walk the 600m long Silk Road, on which car tracks are still visible today.  Continue to Ajloun, where you will visit the castle built by Saladinn. The castle of Ajloun (Qal'at Ar-Rabad) was built in 1184 AD by a town keeper Salah El Din on a mountaintop to monitor the iron ore mines and specially to prevent the Franks from invading the city of Ajloun. The castle of Ajloun dominated the three main routes leading down to the Jordan Valley and protected the traffic and trade routes between Jordan and Syria. It also represented an important link in the chain of defense against the Crusaders, who for decades tried unsuccessfully to capture the castle and the nearby village.

Madaba is also called the city of mosaics. The main attraction is the Byzantine Palestine mosaic in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. Originally it consisted of two million mosaic pieces and had a size of 25x 5 meters. The mosaic shows hills, valleys, villages, and towns up to the distant Nile Delta.

Mount Nebo, this is the place where Moses was buried, and it is the most revered holy place in Jordan. From the top of the mountain, like Moses, you can admire a wide panorama that stretches from the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea via Jericho to Jerusalem and is oftenreferredtoas the Holy Land. For centuries, the mountain has been a Christian pilgrimage site, and as early as the late 4th century, the first church was built on the Nebo to mark the place of Moses' death.

Petra – probably the most fascinating sight in Jordan. Petra is one of the seven new wonders of the world and inspires with its imposing architecture. The city was built by the Nabataean tribe more than 2000 years ago. Through the Siq, a 1.2km long gorge with rock walls up to 100m high, you can reach the interior of the mountains on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. The first thing you see is the breathtaking façade of the treasure house, called Al Khazneh. It is believed that gold, precious stones and other treasures were kept in this treasure house. Crowned by the urn on the top. The façade of the treasure house is about 45m high and 30m wide and was built in the 1st century BC. It is believed that it was originally a tomb for a Nabataean king and was later used as a temple. In addition to many other sights in Petra, which you can not explore even on a one-week visit, there is the monastery – Al Deir. Around 800 steps lead up to the imposing building, which consists of 45x50m buildings. But there is so much more to discover, experience it for yourself!

WadiRum, the desert valley of the Bedouins, framed by brown-red, rugged, and torn mountain ranges, will impress you. The mountains around Wadi Rum, which reach their highest heights with 1254 m (Jabal Rum), are made of granite and sandstone. This typical stone structure explains the large number of springs, especially in the narrower area of rum; Rainwater from winter precipitation slowly penetrates the porous sandstone, eventually pushes onto the impermeable granite, and flows down to the slope on this level; springs then spring up there, often dozens of meters above the valley floor. Therefore, it does not wound that already in the Neolithic Age (from about 8000 BC) the first peasant families cultivated the soil around the rock pieces.
